Dec. 30, 2012 – The St. Augustine Yacht Club on Salt Run was the recent setting for training 13 U.S. Naval Sea Cadets in the fundamentals of sailing. Each cadet rotated through three stations: Safety, Rigging, and Seamanship before sailing the first time “solo” in a 6 foot Optimus Pram sailing dinghy. “Handling a small sailboat by yourself is not as easy as it looks, but it’s really worth it!” observed Cadet Luke Mahan.
Wendy Thomson, instructor of the Junior Sailing Program at the Yacht Club, agrees, “With proper instruction, anyone can learn,” she said.
The St. Augustine battalion of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets/Navy League is a program for youth ages 11 to 17 who are interested in developing their skills in leadership, basic seamanship, courage, self-reliance and military discipline. To learn more, visit www.staugseacadets.org.
